The eclectic singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright gave a two-night performance at the Paramount Theater November 16-17th. Joan As Police Woman, I swear that is her name, opened for Rufus. She seemed to have a quirky sense of humor as she babbled about the bats in Austin and how her name, Police Woman, is like the TV show Police Woman with Angie Dickinson. However, once she started to sing, the songs were serious and she has a powerful voice.
After a short intermission, Rufus came on stage and tonight he performed a solo set. Once you hear him sing it is no wonder that he has 8 albums, he is an amazing poet/singer with a disarming stage presence. He joked with the audience that he better be able to tune his own guitar, especially in front of an Austin audience, other wise they will come and do it for him. He gave a passionate rendition of “Sanssouci” and “Going To A Town”, both songs first appeared on his 2007 album Release The Stars. This tour is in support of his brand new CD Milwaukee At Last!!! which is a CD with all live tracks, including Sanssouci and Going To A Town.
