Thursday April 29, Phoenix played a sold out show at Stubb’s. This French nouveau-pop band is sweeping the world with their infections tunes from their album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. The band was only started in 1995 by Thomas Mars (vocals), Deck d’Arcy (bassist) and Chris Mazzalai (guitar) to be joined latter that year by Laurent Brancowitz (guitar). The song “Too Young” (2000) was featured on the soundtrack to the movie Lost In Translation. From that moment on it seems that movie and TV producers love to use their unique flavored pop songs on soundtracks such as New York I Love You, Where The Wild Things Are, Alice In Wonderland and Cougar Town to name but a few shows and movies. Maybe the most persistent wide spread exposure in the US market has come with the Cadillac commercial using the track “1901”!
Phoenix is not new to Austin, they played ACL in 2009, then another show at La Zona Rosa in December 2009. Once again, Phoenix did not disappoint the crowd, they started off with “Lisztomania” followed by “Long Distance Call” and during the third song “Lasso” to the delight of his fans, Thomas Mars stepped off the stage and went right up to the audience. This was a high energy show, there was not a dull moment. The set list also included: “Lasso”, “Consolation Prizes”, “Fences”, “Girlfriend”, “Armistice”, “Love Like A Sunset”, “Run Run Run”, Napoleon Says” and “Rome”. It is hard to stand still when they play, the songs make the audience want to dance. Next time they come to Austin, make sure you go see them!
