Despite some low ticket sales, the Goo Goo Dolls put on a fantastic show Wednesday night June 9 at Austin Music Hall. John Rzeznik and Robby Takac with drummer Mike Malinin produced a tight, well run show. The songs rocked like they have for the past 24 years. I guess every one is a bit older now with maybe less sharp eye sight, which might explain why they had the largest set list I have ever seen on a stage. Two 8×11 pieces of paper taped together with huge fonts for the song names. Robby Takac ran and jumped around the stage in his socks giving the audience quite a show as he played the bass. John Rzeznik (lead vocals and guitar) was equally intense and animated, this is how a rock band should be, no shoe gazing here! The stage lights were well balanced with nice color changes and some excellent bright white light on both John and Robby. The drummer Mike Malinin was left out of the spot light and sat atop a slightly raised stage engulfed in red light. On rhythm guitar was Brad Fernquist and Korel Tunador on keyboards.
This tour is in support of their ninth studio album, Something For The Rest Of Us. Out of the 22 songs they played, four songs were from the new album which included “Sweetest Lie”, “Home”, “Now I Hear” and “As I Am.” Of course they played their 1998 Grammy nominated hit song “Iris” in addition to “Slide”, “Here Is Gone” and other favorites from past albums. Looking at their MySpace , they seem to be touring the entire U.S this summer. Don’t miss this show when it comes to your city!
